Another role of The Black Knights is to aid retention across the Royal Artillery and wider Services by running Accelerated freefall expeditions for troops returning from operations. The team runs between three and five of these exercises every year, normally with 16 students per exercise.
These exercises have proven to be a great success, allowing soldiers to spend a few weeks skydiving in California, USA, before returning to normal regimental duties.
The exercise is ran in California as the climate allows for year round sunshine thus ensuring the students are able to complete the minimum of 18 jumps required to obtain their FAI ‘A’ Certificate and qualify as solo skydivers.
The program also allows for at least one weekend stand down and most soldiers head off to explore California, usually visiting Los Angeles or San Diego.
